Just because it’s February doesn’t mean you should ditch your goals for the New Year. In 2019, we’re encouraging you to make goals that will benefit the planet!
It is estimated that 18 million tons of plastic enter the ocean each year. Much of that plastic waste is packaging, used only once and then discarded.
According to recent studies, Americans used about 50 billion plastic water bottles last year. Every minute, one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into the ocean instead of into the landfill or recycling. Even when your trash does make it to the bin, plastics never break down and instead leach harmful chemicals into the environment and water supply. In the U.S., the recycling rate for plastic is only 23 percent, which means that 38 billion water bottles end up in landfills, oceans, and waterways each year.
In 2019 focus on reducing, reusing, and refusing.
It takes plastic 400 years to degrade. Meaning most of the plastic you have used in your life still exists somewhere. While recycling is a good alternative to the landfill, a very small percentage of plastic waste actually gets recycled!
Horrifying, but real statistics such as these inspired our team to take the #PlasticPledge. At FloWater, we initiated the pledge at one of our events in San Francisco, by challenging attendees to eliminate plastic bottles and products from their routine. Since then, we’re determined to remind our clients, staff, friends, and community to take the pledge as well! It can be hard to go cold turkey and cut out every single plastic in your life, so we suggest you start small by carrying a reusable bottle and avoiding plastic bottled water at all costs.
By refilling your bottle with a FloWater water bottle refill station you’re taking one step to sacrifice the convenience of a plastic water bottle to help the health of our planet, while drinking the best tasting water along the way! As you gradually build on your plastic free practice, you can start to ex out more and more besides just plastic bottles. Bags, straws, you name it!
