2024 Plastic Water Bottle Recall: Nearly 2 Million Plastic Water Bottles Recalled Due to Contamination Concerns

In spring of 2024, Fiji Natural Artesian Water, one of the world’s most popular bottled water brands, issued a major recall affecting 1.9 million bottles. This recall was prompted by findings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which detected elevated levels of manganese and the presence of three bacteria strains in the water.

The impacted products were primarily sold in 500ml bottles and distributed through Amazon between February 1 and March 3, 2024. Although the company assured that the levels of contamination pose no immediate health risk, the recall was initiated as a precautionary measure. Consumers are urged to check for specific production dates: November 11, 12, 13, 24, and 25, 2023.

Fiji Water emphasized that this is a voluntary recall, and consumers can request refunds by contacting the company. Nearly all of the affected inventory has been pulled from distribution centers, so the risk to consumers is minimal. Still, it’s recommended to dispose of any affected bottles you may have purchased earlier this year.

This recall showcases yet another reason why consumers should avoid single-use plastic water bottles. Beyond their alarming environmental impact, drinking from plastic water bottles presents significant health concerns, from contaminations like this to the ingestion of microplastics.
